US scores World Cup's fastest goal, defeats Ghana in shock result

United States striker Clint Dempsey claimed a special place in World Cup history, scoring the fastest goal of the 2014 tournament as his side shocked Ghana.

Dempsey scored exactly 30 seconds after kick-off.While it was easily the fastest goal of the Brazil tournament, it is also the fifth-fastest goal ever recorded in the World Cup finals and helped his side upset their rival 2-1.Dempsey's scorcher started with a pass from teammate Jermaine Jones.He then made a mockery of Ghana's defence, schooling John Boye with a brilliant move before slotting his shot off the far post and into the net.

Andre Ayew managed to equalise for Ghana eight minutes before the end of play, but German-born John Brooks responded with a dramatic winner.

Victory for the United States avenged defeats to the same opposition in the past two World Cups, the latter when Ghana went on to the quarter-finals.

The United States are grouped with Ghana, Germany and Portugal at the World Cup.
