Europa League semi-final RECAP: Ange Postecoglou makes Aussie history with Spurs-United final locked in

Ange Postecoglou still had his game face on but the post-match interview was cordial as the Tottenham Hotspur manager answered questions about his tactics on Bodø's unusual artificial pitch.

And why wouldn't it be after the Australian made history by piloting Spurs into the Europa League final against Manchester United.

But the mood shifted a little when UEFA's official broadcast inquisitor asked one particular question.

For Manchester United or Tottenham, a miserable campaign will end in Europa League glory.

Despite both teams languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League, the Champions League is now just one game away.

That's the reward on offer after the two troubled English clubs advanced to the final of Europe's second tier competition on Friday (AEST).

United beat Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the semifinal second leg at Old Trafford and won 7-1 on aggregate.

Tottenham won 2-0 away at Bodø/Glimt to seal a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Ange Postecoglou has made history by becoming the first male Australian football manager to reach the final of a major European final.

Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur ended Bodø/Glimt's fairytale on Friday (AEST) with a 2-0 win in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final, north of the Arctic Circle in chilly Norway.

Spurs won the tie 5-1 in dominant fashion and will meet Manchester United in a dream all-England final in Bilbao on May 22 (AEST).

After a scoreless first half in Bodø, Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro struck to ease Postecoglou's nerves and send Spurs through.

Postecoglou is under immense pressure to keep his job after a disastrous Premier League campaign.

But winning a coveted European title would make him hard to sack.

Spurs lead 2-0 as the Europa League final awaits!

Pedro Porro is the goal scorer and it looks like it was an attempted cross that ended up in the back of the net.

Tottenham won't mind in the slightest and they now hold a 5-1 aggregate lead after 69 minutes of the second leg.

They will almost certainly meet Manchester United in the decider.

United have just equalised against Athletic Bilbao through Mason Mount.

United lead 4-1 on aggregate.

Dominic Solanke strikes and Spurs are on the brink!

Captain Cristian Romero did a superb job to rise high from a corner and head the ball across the face of goal.

Solanke did the rest as he slid in for an expert poacher's finish.

Ange Postecoglou is delighted and Spurs lead 1-0 after 63 minutes.

They're up 4-1 on aggregate and the Europa League final is within reach.

Ange Postecoglou has gone to his bench for the first time as Mathys Tel comes on for Richarlison.

It remains 0-0 after 61 minutes but Big Ange still, understandably, looks far from relaxed.

In the Conference League, Chelsea lead Djurgårdens 1-0 at halftime and Fiorentina are 2-1 up over Real Betis.

Antony has scored from a terrific free kick for Betis.

With that 3-1 cushion, Spurs have been happy to mostly let Bodø/Glimt control possession and indeed the hosts have had 64 per cent of the ball so far.

Stan Sport's Craig Foster notes the synthetic pitch is playing a little slow with some drizzle about and Mark Bosnich believes Spurs have had the game's better chances so far.

"Spurs are reasonably comfortable, but how many times have we said that all of these European teams... you're not always going to control all the games in European football," Foster said.

"You're away from home in different circumstances, you have to be able to suffer and you have to be able to get through. For Ange and for Spurs now, it is whatever you need to do to get through this game, you need to do it.

"As as of tomorrow, or as of an hour's time, no one cares how the game went, no one cares how you played. All they're going to care about is he's going to be making this final."

Aspmyra Stadion only holds 8270 fans and this is the hottest ticket in Bodø as fans watch the game from nearby apartments.
