A South American football match was forced to be cancelled after a swarm of bees invaded the ground and chased players and supporters from the stadium.

On-field hostilities between Ecuadorian Primeria A rivals River Plate and Aucas were quickly forgotten when hundreds of the insects took over the match at the Modelo Alberton Spencer Herrera Stadium.

Footage from the game shows players and officials running in all directions, swatting at their heads, as they try to escape the painful stings of the bees.

However, the dash to safety wasn’t just confined to the field with fans also seen fleeing from their seats.

Thankfully, firefighters wearing protective gear soon came to the rescue but not before officials were forced to abandon the game.

The match was replayed with River Plate left buzzing with a 3-0 victory.
