'Massive wake-up call' as Matildas finish first SheBelieves Cup campaign winless

A valiant debut run at the SheBelieves Cup has ended with a 'wake up call' for the Matildas as they were denied of a win against a fierce Colombian outfit.

A late goal by Hayley Raso was not enough to salvage the Matildas campaign in America as Colombian skipper Catalina Usme recovered her side's lead in the 73rd minute.

The defeat marked the first time in four years that the Matildas had lost three consecutive matches as growing concerns over the side's form were exposed.

Clare Hunt admitted post-match the team's lack of success in the tournament was frustrating, given they are just 12 months out from competing in a home Asian Cup.

"I think for me and the team it was frustrating that we didn't take our chances in the first half," she told Paramount +.

"We could've taken our opportunities early which would've given us a foot up in the competition but it was good to get a goal in the first half.

"We are still in the building phase. It is one year until the Asian Cup so it is good to get squad rotation and get players on the park. But I think it is a massive wake up call.

"Going into the next 12 months we are looking to have a new coach in the next few months. Once we have the assured by the FA we are ready to go."

Colombia set the tone for the battle early as they placed back-to-back shots on target to put Australian goalkeeper Tegan Micah's agility to the test.

But an early error by Katrina Gorry proved costly for the Matildas as Colombia stormed the field to draw first blood.

A cross-field one-touch pass by Mayra Ramirez found Bonilla on the wing, who broke down the side and punched the ball past Micah to put Colombia on the board.

Michelle Heyman looked to replicate her heroic efforts against the USA inside Colombia's box but was unable to gain control of a pass over from Emily van Egmond.

In attempt to rectify her missed effort, Heyman looked to slot the ball past Colombian goalkeeper Natalia Giraldo once more but a thought of indecision denied her the chance.

"These little mistakes are what Colombia might just take up," Grace Gill said on Paramount.

"A little bit of indecision ... too much of it shown to the Colombian goal keeper.

Heyman was substituted off in the second half as Sermanni injected the experience of Caitlin Foord and Mary Fowler.

Capitalising on the sensational attacking efforts of Charli Grant and Fowler, Raso punched the ball through two defenders to find the back of the net in the 69th.

But a deflection just three minutes later saw Colombia surge back in front and claim victory.
