Tottenham avoid relegation, West Ham win soured by Championship fate in tense final day

Tottenham Hotspur has avoided the embarrassment of relegation to the Championship after a 1-0 win against Everton on the final day of the Premier League.
Spurs simply needed to win at home to survive with West Ham's match the other big watch.
West Ham needed to win and have Spurs lose to stay up. The Hammers finished victorious in a 3-0 result against Leeds but the outcome at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium sealed their fate.

Spurs finished two points ahead of West Ham in 17th.
The relegation fate for West Ham is a shocking fall after winning the UEFA Conference League trophy in 2023.
Since then the club didn't renew former manager David Moyes' contract, who ironically was in charge of Everton for the Spurs clash.

After Moyes' departure, West Ham has used three managers in Julen Lopetegui, Graham Potter and Nuno Espírito Santo.
Former Spurs and Hammers player Jermain Defoe admitted it would've been a "disaster" if Spurs were relegated but lamented the fall of West Ham too.
"West Ham not too long ago were winning a European trophy and it looked like they passed that stage of fighting relegation," he said on Premier League Productions coverage.

"There's some good players in that squad, really good players so to get relegated today it will be tough for those West Ham fans to cop that."
The first domino of the final day came when Tottenham's João Palhinha scored before half-time after scoring off a rebound from his own header.
West Ham and Leeds were tied at 0-0 by half-time but following the break, Valentín Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson all scored.
The match at London Stadium finished minutes earlier than Spurs and Everton but the anxious watch turned to agony with the latter unable to score.
Tottenham will now need to salvage its reputation after a disastrous season.
Aussie manager Ange Postecoglou was sacked last year after finishing 17th despite winning the Europa League.
Thomas Frank took over and was subsequently sacked. Igor Tudor was appointed interim manager but left by mutual consent after a horrible run of results and the death of his father.
Roberto De Zerbi then took charge amid a relegation battle and did enough to keep the side up.
