'I was lost': Ange Postecoglou reveals the mistake he made in accepting the top job at Nottingham Forest

Ange Postecoglou admits he made a mistake accepting a job as manager of Nottingham Forest, having now come to terms with the reality of being sacked twice in six months.

A chance to manage a team in the Premier League is an opportunity that does not come around often, with only some of the game's best given the chance to do so twice.

It is that fact that Postecoglou could not overlook, especially given he could not come to terms with the reality of being unemployed for the first time in over 20 years.

"There is not much to talk about with Forest because this program will last longer than my tenure," he laughed, speaking on The Overlap's Stick to Football podcast.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis called on the Australian manager to take over the top job at his club following the sudden departure of Nuno Espirito Santos, with Postecoglou only just recently exiting Tottenham Hotspur after winning a major trophy.

However, Postecoglou's arrival was not a simple one for Forest, given the internal instability at the club along with the backlash from Santos' dismissal.

Still, the 60-year-old was not afraid of the job he had agreed to do, walking into the City Ground with his head held high and a plan to help put the team back on track.

That game plan was not as successful as he hoped; rather led to him being informed for the second time in one year that he was no longer needed to fulfil his duty.

"That was on me, the whole Forest thing," Postecoglou said.

"That was a bad decision by me to go in there. But there is no point me blaming, 'Oh, I didn't get time' or anything. I should never have gone in there.

"It was too soon after Tottenham, and I was taking over at a time where, obviously, I wanted to do things differently, and they were kind of used to doing things in a certain way. I have to cop that, that was my mistake."

Postecoglou admitted that he had received warnings that he had made a mistake taking on the top job at Nottingham Forest.

"Everyone around me was saying that to me," he continued.

"But it was the first time in 20-odd years that I wasn't working. I was lost.

"In the off-season, I was so lost. Usually you would go away with your family, but there are transfers and pre-season (ahead), so your mind is (on that). I was lost."

The talent at Nottingham Forest could not go unnoticed at the time and was cited by Gary Neville as a positive reason for any manager to take on such a job.

Postecoglou agreed, saying, "That was the only reason that sucked me in.

"(But) they were also in Europe in the Europa League, and I wouldn't have minded another crack at that."

However, Postecoglou did not take into account the impact Santos' departure had on the club and its supporters.

"Most of the time when you go into a club, they usually want change," he said.

"The reality is, I think they were reluctant to get rid of Nuno. It was only because of, I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but there is no way they would have sacked Nuno after last year.

"(I was) not walking into an environment or a playing group that was really looking for change. From that point of view, I was thinking to myself, 'Well, with that group of players, I reckon I could turn them around pretty quickly'.

"We had a couple of games that could have gone our way, but again, strategically, I am the worst decision maker in terms of that time in my career."

Postecoglou conceded that he felt he never had the full support of the fans, as he believes they "were still seeing me as the Tottenham manager".

While he did not use that as an excuse for his dismal results at Forest, he did recognise that had things gone the other way, he may have had more time with the team.

"You need to leave some space for people to process everything, but I just wanted to work, mate," he said.

"We only had eight games, and I think I had three of them at home. I just never got any traction. It is no wonder that the supporters never took to me.

"Even if I had won a couple of those games, long-term it was never going to work out.

"To be honest, I don't think they wanted what I had to offer."

Postecoglou then turned his attention to Marinakis.

"The owner, you can say what they want about him, but Forest wouldn't be in the Premier League probably without them," Postecoglou continued.

"He wants them to win, and he doesn't care how they do it."

While Marinakis' sudden decision to axe Postecoglou was viewed as ruthless to some, the former Celtic coach recognised any club would have done the same.

"If I had started my season like I did in the second year or like how Thomas (Frank) started this year, I would've been gone," Postecoglou said of his time at Spurs.

"There is no way I would've survived at Tottenham. We got off to a flyer in those first 10 games, and I needed that.

"I didn't have a lot of skin in the game in terms of people saying, 'Well, he has a body of work that we already know'. I had to prove myself."
