Injury crisis grows ahead of Olympics as Matildas veteran confirms season over

The Matildas have been hit with more injury news four months out from the Olympic Games.

Midfield veteran Katrina Gorry announced her Women's Premier League season is over after injuring her ankle during a game for West Ham.

The 31-year-old limped off the field in the 21st minute against Chelsea and has now confirmed she won't be back for the Hammers this campaign.

She posted an image of herself in a moon boot to Instagram.

"I've spent the last few days sitting with my emotions," Gorry wrote.

"Now it's time to face this next challenge and trust in my body to come back stronger and more in love with the game."

Gorry has been ruled out of Australia's looming friendly against Mexico.

Superstar striker and captain Sam Kerr is out with a serious knee injury and is all but certain to miss the Olympics.

Clare Hunt and Courtney Nevin also sit in the casualty ward, and are racing the clock to be on the plane to Paris.

The Matildas have never won an Olympic medal but are considered a strong chance this time around after narrowly missing the podium at last year's World Cup.

Their Olympic campaign begins on July 26 against Germany.

Before then, the team has games against Mexico in Texas on April 10, and against China on May 31 in Adelaide.
