Brittany Merlo, Bridie O’Gorman, Eva Karpani and Pesi Palu were all on the sidelines and greeted by Fowler and Dutch star Kerstin Casparij with Wallaroos and City jerseys swapped between the groups.
Fowler was first to score at Joie Stadium in City’s first WSL match with the result putting them second just below Liverpool. Liverpool won its first match 4-0 against Charlton.
City fired multiple shots in the first half but couldn’t find the clinical blow. However, that first goal finally arrived in the 49th minute.
Fowler did the lead up work on the right wing, crossing a ball into the box which Birmingham cleared poorly straight to Laura Blindkilde Brown who attempted her own cross.
Birmingham couldn’t clear that cross either with Fowler, now in the box, shooting from close range to open the scoring.
Khadija Shaw scored the other two goals for City while Oceane Hurtre’s goal for Birmingham didn’t arrive until the 90th minute.
Manchester’s next fixture will fall on September 13 against Aston Villa, the same day the Wallaroos play England at CorpAcq Stadium.
The match is part of the WXV Global Series with the Wallaroos to play France and Scotland after England. Home matches against Scotland will follow.
