Real Madrid star Luka Modric buys stake in championship team Swansea City

Real Madrid star Luka Modric has taken on an opportunity as an investor and co-owner in Welsh football club Swansea City.

The 39-year-old is the latest player to move into club ownership, having purchased a minority stake alongside several American investors in the Championship team.

The exact amount invested by Modric remains unknown but the Croatian star admitted he is excited to pass on his knowledge in bid to help the team develop.

"This is an exciting opportunity," Modric said in a statement.

"Swansea has a strong identity, an incredible fanbase and the ambition to compete at the highest level.

"Playing at the highest level, I believe I can provide my experience to the club.

"My goal is to support the club's growth in a positive way and to help to build an exciting future."

Swansea enjoyed a solid seven-year run in the Premier League between 2011 and 2018 but have struggled to achieve the results to return back into the top flight competition.

The club's financial battles have been a struggle in recent months as their last released accounts indicated a pre-tax loss of $31.7m AUD.

Swansea chief executive Tom Gorringe said "there is no better role model in the game" for his players to learn from and develop.

"His endorsement of our ambition and willingness to support us on our journey will be instrumental as we aim to continue to improve our results on and off the pitch," he said.

"In our conversations, he has demonstrated his passion for the club, his knowledge of how we are performing, and a genuine passion to help us improve.

"I am really looking forward to working with him more closely to drive us forward."

Modric's investment follows his club teammates Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior's purchases into Ligue 2 outfits Caen and FC Alverca, respectively.

The stake is one of the several investment moves Modric has made in recent weeks as he also become a part-owner of Croatian Beer company Zeppelin Craft Brewery.

Although, Modric's main focus for the upcoming weeks as he prepares to face Arsenal in the second leg of the Champions League quarter finals on Thursday (AEDT).
