Socceroos star Aziz Behich whacked with two-game ban over 'violent conduct' act

Aziz Behich has been hit with a two-match ban by the A-League after being found guilty of "violent conduct" in Melbourne City's 3-1 defeat to Melbourne Victory.

The Melbourne City skipper was issued a disciplinary notice by the match review committee after he was seen stomping on Victory striker Nikos Vergos.

The on-field act went unnoticed by the referee in the 46th minute with no further review on VAR used.

Football Australia confirmed the Socceroos star had been charged with "assault on a player", having in this incident not attempted to challenge for the ball.

Behich has until Wednesday to challenge the matter or accept the two-game suspension.

The two-match ban leaves a cloud over the defender's opportunity to return in the green and gold jersey next month, as he loses his platform to make his case to new Socceroos coach Tony Popovic.

Behich featured in the opening two games of the Popovic era, starting in the nation's first round three qualifying victory over China.

Popovic opted to move the 33-year-old to the bench in the second match in favour of Jordy Bos against Japan, which ended in a draw.

The 51-year-old is expected to name his squad for the November games on Friday, November 8.
