Hungary assistant coach Adam Szalai 'stable' after sideline medical emergency against the Netherlands

Hungary assistant coach Adam Szalai was evacuated from the team's Nations League clash against the Netherlands after he suffered a medical emergency on the sidelines.

The match was stopped by referee Jesus Gil Manzano in the seventh minute as Szalai appeared to suffer a seizure on the bench.

The 36-year-old was surrounded by team staff and substitutes with a a protective wall was built around him as medics began treatment.

Play was halted for 13 minutes due to the medical emergency with players left to make the decision if they wished to continue on with the match.

Szalai, a former forward for Hungary, was transported to a nearby hospital for further examination and later confirmed to be in a "stable and conscious" state.

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk told Dutch NOS television the off-field event came as "quite a shock."

"You see someone lying down, you see someone shaking, that is quite scary," van Dijk said.

"But thankfully at a certain point it became clear that he was stable."

Van Dijk revealed he was told Szalai had suffered a similar medical emergency in the past by Liverpool teammate and Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai.

"it is still very scary to see. I hope he is doing well and that he recovers," he continued.

"I think it shows a lot of strength that they (Hungary) did carry on [with play]. I have a lot of respect for that."

The Netherlands went on to defeat the nation 4-0, cementing their spot in the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals.
