Moenchengladbach held 1-1 by Mainz

Borussia Moenchengladbach have missed an opportunity to move within two points of Bayern Munich at the top of the German football Bundesliga after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Mainz.

Max Kruse, recalled to the Germany squad for forthcoming Euro 2015 qualifiers, found the top of the net with a left-foot shot to put Moenchengladbach ahead in the 15th minute in Sunday's match.

But Jonas Hofmann levelled for Mainz from the penalty spot just after the half hour after Junior Diaz's cross struck Julian Korb on the hand.

Lucien Favre's Moenchengladbach side move to 13 points from seven games, in third place behind Hoffenheim on goal difference.

Mainz move sixth on 11 points.

Bayern have a four-point lead at the top of the table after thrashing Hanover 4-0 on Saturday.

Wolfsburg are seventh on 11 points after a 1-0 victory over Augsburg in Sunday's earlier game.

Brazilian defender Naldo hit the winner in the 58th minute after playing a one-two with Sebastian Jung.

Wolfsburg go above Augsburg, who are 10th on nine points.
