Hodgson tinkers with Euro squad vs Aust

The friendly against the Socceroos looms as a crucial 90 minutes for England boss Roy Hodgson, who is yet to settle his squad for Euro 2016.

It's the penultimate game of Hodgson's preparations ahead of the tournament, and his second-last chance to tinker with the diamond formation he's expected to employ.

Leicester City star Jamie Vardy is missing the game to get married and Harry Kane will reportedly be rested, opening the door for Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford to make his international debut.

Rashford may well start from the bench with Daniel Sturridge and captain Wayne Rooney potentially leading the line, although Hodgson has indicated he would like to use Rooney in a deeper role at the Euros.

Rashford is expected to be culled from Hodgson's final squad for the Euros, but a start against Australia could prove vital experience for the man touted as a future England star.

"You'll know from my past record that I'm not afraid to give young players a chance," Hodgson said.

"I don't dismiss them on the basis of their age. There isn't an awful lot of chance for him to stamp his authority on myself and the coaching staff because there is such a short period of time.

"But I am ruling nothing out."

Hodgson also plans to use the game at Sunderland's Stadium Of Light to test the fitness of Jack Wilshere.

Wilshere missed most of Arsenal's season with a broken leg, but played against Turkey on Sunday in a 2-1 win.

He'll be given time against Australia and then in England's last warm-up game against Portugal, to prove he's ready for the Euros.
