Footballer seriously injured in hotel fall

Pelayo Novo, a midfielder for second-division Spanish club Albacete, has been seriously injured after falling from the third floor of his team's hotel.

The club said the Spaniard was in stable condition following the "stunning" accident in the northeastern city of Huesca.

The 27-year-old was taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Zaragoza.

Other details were not immediately available, but local media said he was expected to undergo surgery for multiple fractures.

Reports said Novo fell into an open space in an interior area of the hotel, apparently while leaning on a railing and talking on the phone.

The team was at the hotel ahead of its match against Huesca later Saturday.

The Spanish league postponed the game.
