Footballer sees red over flying elbow
An Argentinean footballer has been red-carded after delivering a nasty flying elbow to the head of a rival during a Primera Division match.
Playing in the nation's top league, Belgrano defender Pier Barrios lost his cool, causing Chicago Nueva rival Alejandro Gagliardo to nearly lose his head during an ugly challenge for a high ball.
Gagliardo was positioned ready to make a header when Barrios charged in from the side and leapt at him, crashing his elbow into the back of the 25-year-old's skull.
The 29th minute incident unfolded right in front of the referee, who had no doubt it was deliberate and was quick to issue Barrios a red card.
It is not known what set Barrios off on his spiteful challenge.
Fortunately for Belgrano, Barrios' rush of blood had no bearing on the result with the 10-man home side going on to win 3-1.
However, the 24-year-old looks destined for a long stint on the sidelines.
