Player ratings: Teen’s perfect performance before penalty misfire

As the Socceroos bow out to Egypt in a tense 4-2 penalty shootout in Dallas, emphasis was on the Australian side’s bright future with the 2026 squad.

That includes the youngest player on the national team, Lucas Herrington, who shone bright during the 120-minute match and found the courage to put his hand up for a penalty opportunity.

Although he missed in the pivotal moment, Herrington was praised for his performance as Australia now has to wait another four years for their chance on the World Cup stage.

Patrick Beach: Could do little with the goal and was tidy once again with his hands and distribution, came up with one of the saves of the tournament to force the game into extra time. Rating - 8

Alessandro Circati: Another solid performance as his passing and general defensive organisation was key in helping the Socceroos defy a dangerous Egyptian attack led by Mohammad Salah. Rating - 7

Harry Souttar: An imposing performance from the captain as he provided a calm head at the back. Was a presence in both boxes and won every dual which was thrown his way. Rating - 8.5

Lucas Herrington: For one so young his ability to stay calm and composed despite the pressure of the occasion was impressive. Came up with a huge tackle deep into extra time against the dangerous Haissem Hassan and showed great courage to step up and take a penalty in the shoot-out. Rating - 7.5

Jordan Bos: Unfortunate to pick up a knee injury at the end of the 1st half after a heavy challenge. Looked to push forward at every opportunity but found himself heavily marked and tracked by the Egyptian wide players.Rating - 6.5

Aiden O’Neill: Superb delivery for the Socceroos equaliser and was once againimmense in the midfield as he looked to link the play and provide a defensive shield in front of the Socceroos back line. Rating - 8

Jackson Irvine: Was superb alongside O’Neill in the midfield as his passing retention and work rate epitomised the team first mentality of the Socceroos. Slotted his penalty in the shoot-out with the minimum of fuss. Rating - 8

Aziz Behich: A performance which turned back the clock as his boundless energy defied his age. Solid defensively while providing a constant outlet for the Socceroos down the left. Rating - 7.5

Cristian Volpato: Outstanding first half where he was a constant threat to theEgyptian defenders. Looked to pick up the ball between the lines and was unlucky with a 4th minute effort which crashed off the bar. Faded a little in the second half but showed his quality in an impressive showing.Rating - 7.5

Connor Metcalfe: Work rate was immense as he looked to provide a constant option out wide for the Socceroos. Struggled to carve out any opportunities in a game where chances were at a premium. Rating - 6

Nestory Irankunda: Worked hard up front once again as he looked to get in behind at every opportunity. Pressed from the front when possible as the Socceroos looked to squeeze the space. Rating - 6.5

Kai Trewin (45th): Came on for an injured Bos at half-time and was caught out when Omar Marmoush missed a golden opportunity at the start of the 2nd half. Grew into the game and was defensively sound while looking to provide an attacking outlet when possible. Rating - 6.5

Ajdin Hrustic (73rd): Showed some lovely touches when he was introduced and worked hard defensively as Egypt pushed for a winner. Rating - 6

Mohamed Toure (73rd): Provided fresh legs up front but struggled at times with his touch and decision-making. Rating - 5.5

Paul Okon-Engstler (90th): Introduced for extra time and showed great composure and passing range in the heart of the Socceroos midfield. Rating - 6

Awir Mabil (90th): Came on for extra time to provide energy out wide and stretch the Egyptian defence. Looked sharp and showed great composure to slot his penalty in the shoot-out. Rating - 6

Mathew Ryan (119th): Was brought on for the shoot-out but was unable to deny Egypt a passage to the round of 16. Rating - NA
