President Donald Trump would 'welcome' Iran players to compete in FIFA World Cup in the US in June

Iran's national team will be "welcome" to take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the US later this year, despite the ongoing war between the two countries.

There are just under 100 days until the World Cup kicks off across the US, Mexico and Canada, with the final preparations for the event under way.

FIFA boss Gianni Infantino said he had been in contact with US President Donald Trump about the tournament and one of their key conversations focused on the "situation in Iran".

Infantino revealed via an Instagram post on Wednesday that Trump was aware Iran qualified for the World Cup and that he welcomed their players to compete.

"During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States," Infantino said

"We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together, now more than ever. I sincerely thank the President for his support, as it shows once again that football unites the world."

Iran's three group matches against Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand are all scheduled to take place in the US.

There has been speculation online that Iran may withdraw from the World Cup due to the war. However, the team has not confirmed if they will still participate.

The nation's football federation president, Mehdi Taj, was asked last week about Iran's involvement in the tournament. Taj told Iranian sports outlet Varzesh3 at the time that the team "cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope".

Infantino's message to the team follows just days after Trump revealed to Politico reporters that he does not care if Iran competes in the World Cup or not.

"I really don't care," Trump said when asked about their participation.

"I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They're running on fumes."

Iran's women's team has begun their travels back home following their recent exit from the Asian Cup in Australia.

Six players from that team have been granted humanitarian visas in Australia following concerns about their safety. The rest of the playing group left Australia to return to Iran.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin on June 12 (AEDT).
