Socceroos legend Tim Cahill has been roasted on Instagram for a post that was supposedly to support the Matildas, but hit the wrong note.

The former captain uploaded two videos to social media, one being his goal against Japan in the 2006 World Cup along with his sensational volley against the Netherlands in 2014.

Cahill was reposting the video from the FIFA World Cup's official page and included his own "Happy Matildas Day" caption.

The comments weren't kind for Cahill.

"It's not about you today champ," one user said.

Other comments included "It's about the Matildas not you mate"; "How did you make something nothing about you, about you?"; "Oh dear tone deaf male. And how far did you and your team ever get in the World Cup finals?"

Cahill is Australia's second leading goalscorer of all-time, notching 50 goals for the Socceroos, a tally that only trails Sam Kerr who has scored 63 goals for the Matildas.

Kerr, arguably the most lethal striker in world football, was named to start in the Matildas' World Cup semi final against England, shaking off a calf injury that has stopped her from having her usual influence on the tournament.

Kerr replaced Emily van Egmond in the starting XI for the do-or-die match in a huge boost for the Matildas, although that team news was somewhat offset by news that star defender Alanna Kennedy would be missing due to illness.
