In a scare for the Matildas just 10 weeks out from the FIFA Women's World Cup, captain and superstar striker Sam Kerr was substituted out of Chelsea's game against Everton with a calf problem on Monday morning (AEST).

A Kerr header gave Chelsea a 2-0 lead en route to a 7-0 thrashing of Everton, but the two-time Women's Super League Golden Boot winner received medical attention on the pitch and left the field about 30 minutes into the clash.

Australia will open its World Cup campaign against Ireland on July 20, but going by the comments of Chelsea coach Emma Hayes, there's no need for Matildas fans to worry about the fitness of Kerr.

"Sam was sick last night. She decided to play but her calf was cramping up so we decided to take her out," Hayes told the official Chelsea website.

It made for a disappointing end to Kerr's weekend, which saw her lead the Australian delegation as flag-bearer for King Charles III's coronation at Westminster Abbey.

"Obviously it's an amazing honour," Kerr told Chelsea's official website before the coronation.

"I found out I'd been offered the role from a phone call, but I wasn't sure if I could do it because we have a game on Sunday.
