Champions League recap: Mbappé brothers dominate opening day after ‘childish’ charge

Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland are off the mark in the Champions League as Real Madrid and Manchester City kicked off their campaigns with wins.

Mbappé gave record 15-time champion Madrid an early lead en route to 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Haaland scored both goals as 2023 winner City beat Porto 2-0.

Madrid and City are expected to be among the main challengers to back-to-back defending champion Paris Saint-Germain this season and both will be relying on their star strikers.

Mbappé’s goal after 14 minutes was his 71st in Europe’s top competition, and Haaland took his tally to 59 in 59 appearances in the Champions League.

Borussia Dortmund beat Villarreal 3-2, and Real Betis won by the same score at Lille.

Aston Villa also won 3-2 over Club Brugge and AEK Athens sealed a 1-0 win over LASK.

Real Madrid opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 home win over Inter Milan, with Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde scoring before halftime and Carlos Augusto pulling one back in the 76th minute.

Manchester City won 2-0 at Porto thanks to two second-half goals by Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker opened the scoring with a header in the 47th minute and struck from inside the box in added time to seal the victory.

Real Betis twice came from behind to beat Lille 3-2 away, with Marc Bartra scoring in the 34th and 49th minutes before Troy Parrott's 54th-minute winner.

Lille scored their opener in the 12th minute and regained the lead through Alexsandro in the 37th. The hosts later had Ethan Mbappé sent off for an elbow to the face of an opponent.

Borussia Dortmund beat Villarreal 3-2 at home. Renato Veiga’s 53rd-minute own goal put Dortmund ahead before Santiago Mourino equalised in the 66th. Serhou Guirassy restored the lead in the 80th minute and scored the third with a 84th-minute penalty, before scoring an own goal in added time while trying to help in defence.

Earlier, Aston Villa survived a second-half surge from Club Brugge to open their campaign with a 3-2 away win, with Pau Torres providing two assists for Unai Emery's side.

The Mbappés quickly made a mark for their clubs in the Champions League, with little brother Ethan red carded for elbowing an opponent in the face.

The sending off came in the 56th minute when Lille trailed 3-2 at home to Real Betis, while big brother Kylian helped Real Madrid lead 2-0 against Inter Milan.

Ethan Mbappé's evening had started well with a precise assist that helped lift Lille into a 12th-minute lead just minutes before Kylian opened the scoring in Madrid.

Kylian Mbappé helped win possession from Inter deep in the Italians’ half then stretched to shoot a first timer low into the goal in the 14th minute.

At age 27, Mbappé is playing in his 99th career Champions League game and scored his 71st goal.

Now aged 19, Ethan Mbappé made his Champions League debut in January 2025 when Lille last played in the competition.

He was injured and could not play when Lille hosted Madrid and his big brother earlier in that season, which was the first for each at their current clubs after both left Paris Saint-Germain.

The game in Lille is just Ethan Mbappé’s third Champions League game and his second start.

Mbappé was sent off after a video review by the match officials.

They spotted he had raised his right elbow to the face of Betis defender Natan passing behind him in an off-the-ball clash.

Mbappé caressed a left-footed cross to the far post where Japan forward Ayase Ueda was standing almost on the goal line by the time the ball arrived on his head.

Inter Milan are making José Mourinho sweat after scoring their opening goal against Real Madrid.

Carlos Augusto scored in the 77th minute in Spain.
