Melbourne Victory coach Patrick Kisnorbo upended by Lucas Mauragis in dramatic season opener

The opening match of the A-League failed to offer a single goal.

But it wasn't without a moment of comedy ... and a red card.

37 minutes into a wet match between the Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Victory, the former cleared the ball.

A Victory header found Mariners left-back Lucas Mauragis who started a run but Zinédine Machach's challenge led to the ball going out.

Mauragis then slid straight into Victory coach Patrick Kisnorbo who was upended.

Kisnorbo then showed his strength to help up Mauragis by the shirt.

"I think we were waiting to see if we were going to get (John) Kosmina, (Kevin) Muscat part two," Andy Harper said on commentary for Paramount+ in reference to the famous incident from 2006.

The notable incidents didn't stop there with Melbourne captain Roderick Miranda red carded for a "dangerous play" as described by Harper.

Miranda connected with the ball first high in the air but then collected Mikael Doka in the back of the head, which drew blood.

After a VAR review, Miranda's red card was confirmed.

Despite only one shot on target from either side, Melbourne had the best chance at breaking the deadlock right on half-time when Bruno Fornaroli had a penalty.

His effort hit the post with the Victory star dropping to the ground in disappointment.

Among the carnage, there was also a record broken with Haine Eames becoming the youngest ever Mariners player, debuting off the bench at 16.
