Fanning tames monster Tasmanian barrel

Three time world surfing champion Mick Fanning has taken on a new beast off the coast of Tasmania.

Fanning, just back in Australia after competing at Teahupo’o in Tahiti, was filmed taking on a huge wave at Tasmania's notorious reef break, Shipstern Bluff, on Wednesday.

The huge lumpy wave breaks onto the cold, isolated south coast of Tasmania and is otherwise known as Devil’s Point.

But its not just the raw power of the wave that makes it so fearsome - the frigid waters are also notorious for huge great white sharks.

Fanning travelled with Sydney big wave surfer Mark Mathews, who said the day was nuts.

"It was crazy to have Mick Fanning down there, three times world champ, and see how he went and he ended up killing it," Mathews said.

Fanning can be seen riding the huge wave, air-dropping down the stepped face, before slotting into a monster barrel.

"Had the funnest day ever yesterday with the boys at Shippies! Thanks for the call up," Fanning said on Instagram.

"And thanks to all the Tassie crew for being ultimate legends especially Zeb Critchlow for whipping me into this thing!"

Others were not able to escape its clutches though, with Tyler Holmes-Cross picked up and slammed like a rag doll.

The exclusive footage comes just over a month after Fanning’s chilling encounter with a great white shark at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa, made headlines around the world.
