It's taken almost a decade but Australian squash player Ryan Cuskelly has finally conquered the Motor City Open in Detroit.

The 29-year scored one of the biggest wins of his career after defeating Egyptian third seed and defending champion Ali Farag 4-11 11-5 11-5 11-9 in the final on Tuesday (AEDT).

"I've been here nine years," said world No.19 Cuskelly, who had never even reached the semi-finals at the $US70,000 event.

"This isn't like any other tournament ... It feels like I'm playing at home."

The tournament was thrown wide open after Egyptian world No.1 Mohamed El Shorbagy was defeated by unseeded Mexican Cesar Salazar.

El Shorbagy's younger brother and tournament second seed Marwan was also bundled out in the second round by Peru's Diego Elias.

Cuskelly had cracked the final four for the first time after proving too strong for Egyptian fourth seed Omar Mosaad and then accounted for Stephen Coppinger of South Africa 5-11 11-8 14-12 11-4 to reach the decider.
