Victorian cricket captain Matthew Wade needs surgery for the collarbone fracture he suffered on Saturday.

Wade will have an operation on Tuesday and he will be out of action for six weeks.

A Cricket Victoria spokesman said Wade is expected to return after Christmas.

The wicketkeeper will miss the Melbourne Renegades' first couple of matches in the Big Bash League.

Wade won the toss on Saturday morning in Victoria's Sheffield Shield match against WA at the MCG.

But it was his only on-field involvement in the game.

Shortly after, he was batting in the MCG nets when a ball hit him on his right shoulder.

Victoria were allowed to make a late change, bringing wicketkeeper Aaron Ayre into the side for his first-class debut.
