Vic cricket boss backs cancel call

Cricket Victoria chief executive Tony Dodemaide has pointed to Aaron Finch's jarred knee as a good reason for calling off the Sheffield Shield match against NSW.

But Dodemaide added no-one was happy with the controversial decision, saying players missed out on an important chance to press their claims for national selection.

Victoria were awarded the six points after the game was abandoned on Sunday because of unsafe playing conditions.

Finch and Rob Quiney had slipped over shortly before play was suspended initially late on Saturday.

Dodemaide said Finch jarred his knee, but is expected to play in Victoria's next Shield match from November 14 against WA at the MCG.

"Player safety is paramount ... that is their livelihoods," Dodemaide said.

"There were a lot of Australian players out there.

"Aaron Finch is the Australian T20 captain and for him to have a significant knee injury it would have been incredibly serious, so I think the right call was made in the end."

Dodemaide added it was Cricket Australia's decision to award the six points to the Bushrangers.

"We'll certainly take that, but no-one was pleased with the outcome," he said.

"What we wanted was a game to be played on its merits, all the players to have the chance to put performances on the board and stake their claim for national honours.

"Unfortunately it's an opportunity for the players of both sides that's missed."

Dodemaide said the infield immediately around the wicket area was "extremely unstable".

He added Finch's injury was bad enough that if play had continued, he would have had to leave the field for treatment.

"It's difficult to judge from afar, but certainly it seems that they're having some issues up there," he said.

"It is a shame, because the SCG is a world-class cricket ground."
