Australia complete nervy SCG run chase to seal 4-1 Ashes victory

SCG: A nervy run chase has ended in Australia's favour with a 4-1 Ashes series result sealed in Sydney.

The Aussies needed 160 to win on the final day after England was bowled out for 342 in the morning session.

Australia reached the total five wickets down with Alex Carey hitting the winning runs. Carey finished on 16 not out while Cam Green was on 22.

"They were challenged at times, but they won the big moments. That is four Ashes series in a row and a team that is beginning to leave a true legacy," Adam Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket after the keeper hit the winning runs.

England started the day at 8-302, leading by 119 runs with Jacob Bethell on 142.

Bethell would move past the 150 mark but couldn't add a lot to England's total with 40 more runs scored.

The youngster finished on 154 while Josh Tongue was last to go, dismissed for 6 off Mitchell Starc's bowling. Matthew Potts finished unbeaten with 18.

Australia was lucky the total required because the chase was edgy.

Travis Head and Jake Weatherald combined for 62 runs at the top although the latter was lucky to survive a contentious DRS decision.

Head was first to go on 29 before Weatherald (34) departed four overs later.

Steve Smith (12) was cleaned up by Will Jacks bringing the retiring Usman Khawaja to the crease who was given a guard of honour.

His farewell was over quickly when he chopped on to Josh Tongue for 6.

The next round of chaos came in the 23rd over as Marnus Labuschagne shot off for a single. Carey sent him back with Labuschagne run out for 37 leaving Australia 5-121.

Despite some risky run out moments Carey and Green managed to steer Australia to victory, finishing the Ashes in style.
