Steve Smith hits out at photos of Ashes cricketers celebrating

Australian cricket captain Steve Smith has defended his players after photographs were published of Australian cricketers celebrating their 4-0 Ashes victory with cigarettes.

Smith insists the Australian team were merely trying to unwind after a tough six weeks of hard cricket against the Old Enemy. 

The photos, published in the Daily Telegraph, sparked debate about the Aussie cricketers' choice of celebrations, but Smith said the players were entitled to spend their time after an Ashes victory how they choose.

"It's not ideal [that the photos came out].

"The boys were just there trying to have a good time. They were trying to celebrate what's been a great couple of months.

"That's part of playing for your country and winning big series.

"Those kinds of things coming out aren't ideal, but you can't do much about it."

Smith has plenty of support from the public if comments fans posted on social media are to be believed. Many don't see 'what the fuss is about.'

Looking ahead, Smith said there was plenty of cricket

"South Africa's going to be a great challenge for the Test group. 

"It's a great place to play - they're a very good side."

But Smith said there was plenty of excitement for the year following, with the two biggest contests in world cricket looming.

"Obviously in 2019 we have the World Cup and the Ashes in England. 

"The boys are excited to get over there in a couple of years time and win that."

More immediately, though, Smith's ODI side faces a tough series against England.
