DAY ONE OF THE FIRST TEST BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND IN BRISBANE

MAN OF THE MOMENT: David Warner. Recalled batsman Usman Khawaja (102 not out) was a feelgood story but the main yarn was Warner. In his first Test as vice-captain of an inexperienced Australian team, the left-handed opener set up the hosts' dominant start with a mature 163 - his first Test ton since January. Warner found perfect foils in Khawaja and new opening partner Joe Burns (71).
KEY MOMENT: New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum's missed run out chance. Kiwi seamer Tim Southee provided some awkward moments for the openers but McCullum came closest to an early breakthrough when he almost caught Burns short on four with Australia 0-21 - almost.
STAT OF THE DAY: 161. Australia made the most of McCullum's miss, piling on a 161-run opening stand - better than Australia's premier openers Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer's 158-run partnership in their first game together back in 2001.
SUMMARY: They say nice guys finish last. And the self proclaimed "world's most polite team" New Zealand look like extending that trend at the Gabba. The Black Caps maintained their charm offensive with the ball after losing the toss, rarely bowling bouncers in arguably the least hostile attack seen on the bouncy Gabba deck.
