Man of the moment: Quinton de Kock. The wicketkeeper-batsman entered the fray with South Africa struggling at 5-81. But by the time his 84-run knock was over, South Africa had moved to 9-227.

Key moment: Australia's fielding had come under heavy criticism heading into this Test series, so Mitch Marsh's first-over catch was vitally important to set the tone. Marsh took an outstretched diving catch at gully to remove opener Stephen Cook for a duck. It gave Australian an all-important confidence boost. Later in the day, Mitch's brother Shaun took a one-handed beauty at short leg to continue the theme.

Summary: Australia took the opening-day spoils in commanding fashion, but they will be tad disappointed they didn't bowl South Africa out for cheaper. The Proteas were in all sorts of bother at 4-32 and 5-81, before fighting knocks from Temba Bavuma (51) and Quinton de Kock (84) lifted the visitors to a respectable total. Australian pace duo Josh Hazelwood and Mitchell Starc combined for seven wickets in a promising return, before David Warner (73no) did the damage with the bat.
