Smith dismissed by near-perfect delivery

Australian skipper Steve Smith has been sent packing at the Gabba courtesy of a near-perfect delivery from New Zealand paceman Trent Boult.

Smith, who was nearing a half century, was completely undone by an in-swinger that moved late and rose sharply off a length to clip the top of his off stump.

His dismissal, on 48 runs, was the first on day two as Australia continued to build on its impressive first innings having resumed at 2-389.

Never before had there been so many runs scored on day one of a Gabba Test.

Usman Khawaja, who remains not out, scored his maiden Test century alongside fellow left-hander David Warner.

NZ's new-ball combo of Boult and Tim Southee started well but became more wayward as the day wore on.

"As an opening pair I think we found they were bowling a fraction too short," Aussie centurion David Warner said after the day's play.

"They didn't allow us to drive many balls early, which is nice as a batsman.

"But obviously it was a great day for us and credit to our batters."
