Victorian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been involved in a freak run out, cutting short what looked like a promising innings against Western Australia.

Maxwell was involved in a solid partnership with fellow former Australian Test batsman Nic Maddinson, before the incident ended his innings on 57.

Maddinson was facing WA paceman Matthew Kelly and drilled a full-blooded drive back towards the bowler who dropped the sharp chance.

However, incredibly, the ball ricocheted off Kelly’s hands at almost right angles to somehow hit the stumps and find a forlorn Maxwell well short of his ground.

The incident did not phase Maddinson who excelled in his Sheffield Shield debut for Victoria with an unbeaten 159 as the Bushrangers went to stumps sitting pretty at 3-311.

The former New South Wales batsman’s sparkling innings involved 21 fours and two sixes.

With the Australian batting lineup showing its frailties once again in the first Test against India, both Maxwell and Maddinson will be keen to continue showing their worth to the selectors.

Despite Maddinson and Cameron White putting on an unbeaten partnership of 134, fans on social media were still up in arms of Maxwell's horrendous lack of fortune.
