Sean Abbott's chance to impress Australian cricket selectors has hit a roadblock, with the allrounder fracturing his ankle.

Abbott was back to near his best in Wednesday's clash with Australia A for the National Performance Squad (NPS) before he was struck on the ankle by the last ball of the match.

He has been ruled out of the remainder of the quadrangular one-day series against India A and South Africa A after initial scans revealed a fracture.

"Sean will undergo further scans in Sydney to assess the full extent of the damage and treatment required," physio Stephen Timms said.

Abbott earlier smashed 44 off 28 balls at the end of the NPS innings and claimed 2-32 with the ball from his six overs in the rain-affected 12-run victory.

The 24-year-old played three Twenty20s and a one-day international for Australia in October and November 2014 but has not been selected since.

He will now race the clock to be fit for NSW's first game in the national one-day cup, which begins in early October.
