UPDATE: Australian cricket legend Rod Marsh is in a critical but stable condition in a Queensland hospital as he recovers from his heart attack.

Sydney Morning Herald sports journalist Tom Decent reported Marsh would remain in the intensive care unit at Bundaberg Hospital overnight.

Wide World of Sports understands Marsh had surgery to insert stents in his heart last night.

Marsh played 96 Tests for Australia during the 70s and 80s and was more recently a selector, before stepping down from the job in 2016.

The 74-year-old flew into Bundaberg this morning to attend an event for the Bulls Masters charity cricket organisation.

News Corp reports Marsh was in a car with two Bulls Masters officials when he had the heart attack, and he was driven straight to hospital.

Marsh's wife is flying from Adelaide to Queensland.

Western Australia Cricket chief Christina Matthews issued a statement following the news.

"We're deeply concerned to hear of Rod Marsh's medical emergency after suffering a major heart attack," she said.

"On behalf of WA cricket staff and players, and the wider cricket community, I would like to pass on our heartfelt thoughts to Rod and his family.

"He's a much-loved husband and father - and remains one of the wicketkeeping greats of our game."
