NZ batsman Jock Edwards dies aged 64

Former New Zealand international wicketkeeper-batsman Jock Edwards has died at the age of 64.

Edwards, who made his Test debut against Australia in February 1977, played six Tests and eight one-day internationals for the Black Caps and was renowned as a big-hitter.

His best moment in international cricket came when he scored half-centuries in each innings of a drawn Test against England at Auckland in 1978.

His death was confirmed on Monday by the Central Districts province, for which he played 67 first-class matches between 1974 and 1985.

In a statement on Twitter, Central Districts said: "Jock was a terrific teammate and an entertainer in the game whom we know will be hugely missed".

Somewhat out of step with the more structured approach of his era, Edwards felt his flamboyant talents would have suited modern-day Twenty20 cricket, telling his local newspaper, the Nelson Mail, in 2011: "It's more like a backyard game, I'd have loved it."
