England fast bowler Brydon Carse has been dropped from the Test squad as he is investigated over a nightclub incident at the weekend.

Derbyshire Police put Carse in handcuffs and a video was taken by an onlooker that went viral on social media.

“A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night,” a police statement said.

“However the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area.”

Nevertheless, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has axed Carse from the squad for the second Test against Pakistan this week.

The arrest has been referred to the country’s cricket regulator to investigate.

Carse was in the squad for last week’s Test but missed selection in the final team, and so was released to play county cricket.

“We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night and we are currently investigating,” an ECB spokesperson said on Monday.

“We will provide a further update when possible.”

Videos circulating on social media appear to show the Durham bowler in handcuffs being led away from a club by police officers.

Eagle-eyed viewers are also claiming former Test captain Ben Stokes can be seen in the background. ESPNCricinfo reports the person in the background is Stokes, although nine.com.au has not verified it and does not suggest it is the former England captain.

The investigation comes five days after England’s returning Test captain Joe Root spoke of the players being “really good role models and human beings” after a series of incidents and accusations of a drinking culture.

Controversy has followed England around in recent times with off-field issues during last winter’s tours, including Harry Brook being fined £30,000 ($57,000) following an altercation with a bouncer in Wellington as well as reports of drinking during a mid-Ashes trip to Noosa.

More recently, then-captain Stokes broke a team curfew along with Gus Atkinson, with the pair dropped from the second Test against New Zealand at the Oval.

Former captain Stokes eventually announced his retirement from international cricket while Brendon McCullum was later sacked as Test coach.

The ECB would not confirm whether Carse was still in the squad for the second Test against Pakistan. Reuters has contacted Carse’s county side Durham to request comment from the player.

In 2024, South Africa-born Carse was suspended from cricket for three months for historic betting offences.
