Ex-Premier quits top cricket job as divisive BBL issue splits the game

The fallout from the privatisation of the Big Bash League continues, with Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird resigning.
The governing body has confirmed the former New South Wales Premier will step down after nearly four years in the role.

Nine’s newspapers that Baird lost support from his home state of NSW, leading to his decision.
In his absence, former Australian batsman David Boon will take the role in an interim capacity.
New South Wales, along with Queensland, have remained firmly against the sale of Big Bash teams to private investors, likely in India, going against the wishes of Cricket Australia.
Victoria has been particularly set on selling off the Melbourne Renegades, going so far as to dissolve the branding of both of its BBL teams as it looks for a buyer.
The Sydney Morning Herald’s Dan Brettig reports that Baird found himself completely at odds with Cricket NSW, who have withdrawn their support for his re-election in the role.
Baird spoke with the SMH in the aftermath of the decision.
“My term had come to an end in discussion with NSW, and I was happy to help the transition to a new chair, but ultimately, I leave with absolute gratitude and thanks,” Baird said.
“It’s been a real privilege, and I have appreciated working with every single state and stakeholder. It’s been a real life highlight.
“My hope is there’s a chance for a reset. There’s been a decision made [on the BBL] and CA will continue to crack on with that. But the game is much stronger when we’re united, and there’s a chance to unite now.”
Boon said in a statement released by Cricket Australia that it was an honour to step into the role
It is an enormous honour to take the role of Interim CA Chair during what is a hugely exciting and also challenging time for cricket.
“I look forward to leading the CA Board as we continue to make decisions that ensure the long-term health and prosperity of the game here and advancing Australia’s interests globally,” he said.
“I would like to express my sincere thanks to Mike for his commitment and leadership as a passionate advocate for Australian Cricket from grassroots clubs right through to the Cricket Australia and ICC boardrooms and all in between.”
“Mike’s efforts to lead Australian Cricket, confront the many difficult decisions facing cricket and his influential role at the ICC should be appreciated by everyone throughout the game.”
The Renegades and Stars will seemingly continue to exist for this upcoming Big Bash League season, while Cricket Victoria hunts down a buyer for the former and a fresh coat of paint for the latter.
Baird served as the leader of the NSW Liberal Party between 2014 and 2017. He joined the board of Cricket Australia in 2020.
