Big Bash clubs set to merge as privatisation plans ramp up
The future of the Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars has reportedly been sealed, with Cricket Victoria set to effectively merge the two Big Bash franchises and sell their other licence to a private investor.
According to The Age, the decision from state officials was relayed to staff on Tuesday afternoon by chief executive Nick Cummins.

The proposed merger comes as Cricket Australia begin to allow for a phased “self-determination model” for state associations to sell stakes in BBL clubs.
It’s unclear whether the change for the Stars and Renegades will come into effect before next season, which could kick off in India this summer.
Playing squads and contracts appear unlikely to be impacted.
The new Victorian-run team would still be named Melbourne and likely wear navy blue, with a team logo or nickname yet to be decided, according to SEN.
It’s expected that the second licence will have ties to the Indian Premier League.
Both the Stars and Renegades have played in all 15 seasons of the BBL.
