Former English spinner Monty Panesar has revealed the Barmy Army is preparing a song for former Australian coach Darren Lehmann for the Brisbane Test.

Lehmann has been highly critical of Panesar and England fans for the abuse levelled at Steve Smith and himself, even all these years after the sandpaper drama.

The 55-year-old was the coach of the Test side during the incident that rocked world cricket and led to the suspensions of Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft.

Lehmann was not happy about the comments or the Barmy Army's focus on the incident, speaking candidly about how much vitriol he receives.

"Yesterday, I would have copped it about 20-30 times," Lehmann told ABC radio during the Perth Test.

"Obviously you made a mistake, we paid the price for it.

"And that's part of life, isn't it? It's not great for your mental health, to be honest.

"The abuse you get is daily. I mean it's unbelievable."

"He's playing every day, it would be worse for him," Lehmann added on Smith.

"In England, they never forget, it's like they've never done anything wrong in their life.

"We try to move on, but you get reminded every day and that's just part and parcel of what happened.

"The way that Smith, Warner and Bancroft have come the other side, that's been exceptional and the way Australian cricket's revived has been exceptional so I'm really proud of that and the way they've handled it as best they possibly can.

"Steve Smith can hold his head high, how he handles everything and the abuse he gets is (terrible).

"The Barmy Army should be better than that."

Panesar said he hopes Lehmann takes the Barmy Army's antics as banter, but admits they can be told to stop if it becomes too much to handle.

"You know, the way I look at it, you want it to be banter ... you don't want to go to abusive behaviour where you're actually hurting someone and hurting their feelings and their sentiments," Panesar told ABC Sport on Sunday.

"Like, let's be honest, that (sandpaper) incident hurt a lot of people emotionally from a family perspective and Cricket Australia lost a lot of sponsors and stuff like that, it was a very sensitive time.

"Even the Barmy Army themselves, they've got a few songs, but they have also got a code of conduct where if they feel like anyone is acting with abusive behaviour, they chuck them out."

Despite that sentiment, Panesar revealed the Barmy Army has prepared a song specifically for 'Boof' ahead of the Brisbane Test.

"I remember Darren obviously talking about it and I think the Barmy Army has a song ready for him at Brisbane. They're not going to let him go either," he said.

"I think there is a song for Darren Lehmann in the second Test. I hope he takes it as banter and doesn't take it too personal or anything like that. If he feels it is too much, I'm sure the Barmy Army will stop it as well, but there is a song coming for him in Brisbane, I know that for 100 per cent."

The day-night Brisbane Test gets underway on Thursday afternoon.
