Sam Konstas cops horror umpire decision as Steve Smith struggles in Sheffield Shield return

NSW young gun Sam Konstas has copped a rough umpiring decision against Victoria as he looks to mount a case for Test selection this summer.

The 19-year-old, who has catapulted himself into Australian calculations following back-to-back centuries in Sheffield Shield, was dismissed for just two runs at the MCG.

Konstas was trapped in front by seamer Scott Boland and was given out by the umpire, despite replays appearing to show the ball travelling down the legside.

The reaction on social media was entirely in favour of Konstas, but due to the fact the domestic competition does not have DRS, he had no choice but to walk off the field.

Konstas is vying for a spot at the top of the Aussie order following the decision to move Steve Smith back to his customary No.4 spot for a crucial series against India.

Smith was also in action against the Vics and struggled to make an impact, scoring three runs from 29 deliveries before trickling a ball from Fergus O'Neill to the keeper.

Nic Maddinson (19) and Moises Henriques (3) were also out as NSW was left reeling early in their first innings and 4/43 at lunch.

Victoria made 272 to open the fixture, with Peter Handscomb top-scoring with 64.

Marcus Harris - who is also in the mix to partner Usman Khawaja next month - faced 88 balls for just 26 runs before he was dismissed by Mitchell Starc.
