Indian quick Jasprit Bumrah's 'deliberate' act punished by ICC after shock loss to England

Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has landed in hot water with the ICC after a bump to England's Ollie Pope during his side's 28-run loss to the visitors.

The ICC reprimanded Bumrah for "inappropriate physical contact" during the second innings, when he finished his run through by connecting with Pope's shoulder.

Pope, who made a match-winning 196 runs off 278 deliveries in an incredible Test match, immediately complained to Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who looked remorseful on behalf of Bumrah.

Both the umpire and Sharma attempted to calm down an infuriated Pope, who was blocked by Bumrah as he took a single.

A statement released by the ICC noted that Bumrah "deliberately stepped in Ollie Pope's way as the batter went for a run, leading to inappropriate physical contact".

According to the ICC, Bumrah immediately accepted the penalty, which equates to "one demerit point" on his disciplinary record.

The code breach states that a player can be slapped with up to two demerit points as well as a penalty of 50 per cent of their match fee, if they make contact with a player, umpire or spectator during a match.

Bumrah managed to be India's leading runscorer in the second innings, with figures of 4-41, as well as 2-28 in the first innings.

However, it was England captain Ben Stokes' heorics that helped the visitors over the line to take the first Test of the series.
