'Might have a bit more': Earlier fixture could ignite traditional Gabba pitch for third Test

The conditions in Brisbane this weekend "might have a bit more in them" as Australia eye off a crucial Test match victory at the Gabba.

With the five-game series against India locked at 1-1 after two heated clashes, the hosts will have the traditional pace and bounce of the famous ground at their disposal.

Josh Hazlewood is expected to return from injury in a major boost to the side's bowling stocks, with cult hero Scott Boland likely to miss out on selection.

In recent years, Australia have played their red-ball Gabba fixtures in January, which has resulted in losses against India in 2021 and the West Indies last summer.

However, a change in schedule for this year will see the venue host a pre-Christmas game and according to curator David Sandurski, it could pay dividends.

"Different times of year definitely makes it different, it can be a slightly different pitch," he told media on Wednesday.

"Pitches later in the season might have a bit more wear and tear, while ones early in the season usually are a bit fresher and might have a bit more in them.

"Generally speaking, we still prepare the pitch the exact same way every time to try and get the same good carry, pace and bounce that the Gabba is known for.

"We are just trying to make a traditional Gabba wicket like we do each year.

"The aim is to be similar to that wicket where there was a good balance between bat and ball. Hopefully there is a bit in it for everyone."

So far this season, just one Sheffield Shield fixture has been held at the Gabba, with the Queensland side spending a lot of time on the road.

Next summer for The Ashes, the ground will host a day-night pink-ball Test in December.
