Maxwell opens up on ODI axing

Of all the strokes Glenn Maxwell unleashed in his first innings since being dropped, none pleased him as much as an on-drive in the 49th over.

It wasn't nearly as astonishing as any of Maxwell's seven boundaries in Barbados.

But it was the winning run that sealed Australia's place in next week's final of the ongoing ODI tri-series in the West Indies.

Long before on-duty selector Trevor Hohns tapped him on the shoulder, Maxwell knew finishing off games was something he needed to work on.

"Being not out was probably the key thing," Maxwell said of his quickfire 46.

"And something the Australian cricket team has probably wanted more of me over the last couple of years.

"I've been working as hard as I can in the nets to make sure I've been clinical ... it's not just clearing the fence. It's defence, good technical play.

"To finish it with an over to go was quite a clinical ending."

Maxwell knew the pressure was on.

The allrounder had seemingly cemented his place in the XI after being named ODI player of the year at January's Allan Border medal count.

But he was axed in St Kitts after totalling nine runs from his previous five ODI knocks.

It stung, especially given the latest failure came via an incorrect lbw decision.

"That's probably why I was so disappointed to be dropped at that stage," Maxwell said.

"Because I just felt like I hadn't really had a real chance to show what I've got, or show what form I've been in or felt in, during this tournament.

"You feel so ingrained in that side for such a long time .. you feel like you need to be there.

"It hurt at the time but it probably motivated me to train a bit harder and just reassess where I needed to get better."

The 27-year-old, who has played over 100 international matches, admitted to nerves as he walked onto Kensington Oval with the game in the balance.

A switch-hit six off Sunil Narine confirmed Maxwell had his mojo back but the Victorian had a good feeling prior to the awe-inspiring blow.

"I had a little bit of luck. I played and missed once or twice," Maxwell said.

"That's all you need ... it's nice to make a mistake and get away with it.

"Everything just felt really clear out there .. really obvious (what to do)."
