Shaun Marsh fires as Vics slump in opener

Sheffield Shield champions Victoria commenced their summer with a 38-run defeat against Western Australia in the domestic one-day cup on Sunday.

Set a challenging victory target of 284 at the WACA, the Vics pushed hard for early runs only for wickets to fall at regular intervals throughout their innings and they were eventually dismissed for 245 from 46.5 overs as WA won their second successive match.

Opener Marcus Harris made an impressive run-a-ball 47 against his former side, while Travis Dean added a more sedate 30.

Seb Gotch kept his side in the hunt with the No 5 eventually the eighth man out for a run-a-ball 61.

WA's left-arm spinner D'Arcy Short (3-52) knocked over two top-order batsman, while AJ Tye (3-37) cleaned up the tail with the wickets shared among all five frontline bowlers.

The starring role, however, was assumed by WA opener Shaun Marsh who top scored for the second successive match with a knock of 88 as his side reached 4-283.

Peter Siddle's opening over of the match went for 18, including two wides that both went to the boundary, and the Bushrangers' day out in the west barely got any better as Cameron Bancroft (59) and Mitch Marsh (47 not out) both fired for WA.
