Alex Carey produces century for South Australia, boosts claim for Test debut

Ashes hopeful Alex Carey has boosted his chances of an Australian Test debut by scoring a ton for South Australia during today's Marsh Cup.

Carey has been tipped to take over from former Australian Test captain Tim Paine as the wicketkeeper in the side. Paine's bombshell resignation as captain, following the leaking of sexually explicit text messages allegedly exchanged with a former co-worker in 2017.

During his state's one-day clash with Queensland, Carey led his side in runs scored and finished with 101 from just 93 deliveries.

A stunning delivery from fellow Australian Test star Marnus Labuschagne dismissed Carey during the 30th over.

The 30-year-old has represented Australia at ODI and T20 levels. Through 45 ODIs for Australia, Carey has an average of 36.45 with the bat

Earlier today, former Australian captain Mark Taylor backed Carey in to make the Test side.

"I think it's got to be Alex Carey," Taylor told Nine's Sports Sunday.

"(Josh) Inglis being in the T20 side recently has put a bit of pressure on but Alex Carey's been around for a while and been a past vice-captain of the Australian one-day side.

"I've got him in there just for experience."
