Short blasts century for Hurricanes in BBL

A typically destructive D'Arcy Short century has piloted Hobart Hurricanes to 2-180 in their BBL clash with Perth Scorchers at Optus Stadium.

Short announced earlier in the week he would donate $250 to help those affected by Australia's bushfire crisis for every six he hits.

The 29-year-old would end up emptying his back pocket with an unbeaten 103 which included seven sixes, totalling $1,750 worth of donations going to the bushfire appeal.

The left-hander was dropped five times, with new Scorchers addition Tim David copping the crowd blowing raspberries after spilling two straightforward chances in the deep.

Ashton Agar and Jhye Richardson both also shelled tough chances.

Short's ton made him just the fourth batsman, alongside Luke Wright, Usman Khawaja and Craig Simmons, to post multiple BBL centuries.

The leading run-scorer in the previous two BBL seasons, Short will depart for India on Wednesday with Australia's one-day squad, having been added as a late replacement for injured paceman Sean Abbott.

Opening partner Caleb Jewell chipped in with 25 and Ben McDermott finished 20 not out, with the Hurricanes plundering 76 runs off the final five overs after electing to bat against a Scorchers side missing Ashton Turner (illness).

Both the Scorchers and Hurricanes are looking to improve on underwhelming starts, having each claimed two wins to sit sixth and seventh respectively.
