Josh Hazlewood has etched his name in history after claiming Test cricket's first wicket with a pink ball.

The paceman struck in the fourth over of Australia's match against New Zealand in Adelaide, dismissing Martin Guptill LBW with a ball that pitched at length, seamed inward and struck the opener's back pad.

It was the perfect start for the home side which went into the match vowing to honour the memory of Phil Hughes on the 12 month of his death.

Australia were sent into the field after New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum won the toss for the first time in the three-Test series.

Peter Siddle returned to Australia's XI following Mitchell Johnson's retirement.

Siddle was preferred ahead of fellow Victorian James Pattinson.
