Peter Handscomb hoping for Boxing Day Test

Peter Handscomb is glad he held off buying tickets for the Boxing Day Test.

The Victorian batsman is well on his way to playing in the second cricket Test against Pakistan after a successful Australian debut in Adelaide.

But Handscomb is taking nothing for granted as he tries to consolidate a top-order berth in the national side.

The 25-year-old made 54 in the first innings and then hit the winning run as Australia beat South Africa at Adelaide Oval, breaking a five-game losing streak.

It was the first of three successive pink-ball games for Handscomb.

He most likely will play for Victoria in a day-night Sheffield Shield game against Tasmania in Hobart from December 5, followed by the first Test against Pakistan on December 15 at the Gabba.

Handscomb was at the MCG on Tuesday to watch his Victorian teammates on the last day of their Shield match against South Australia.

He confessed to letting his mind wander to the second Test and the ultimate dream of every Victorian player - playing in front of a big Boxing Day crowd.

"Hopefully I can get there first, get selected," Handsconb said.

"If I got the opportunity to come out here in front of a Boxing Day crowd, I'd be pretty stoked.

"I was just about to put my order in for a few Boxing Day Test tickets.

"So I might just hold off on that and get the ones hopefully that the squad members get."

There has been debate about the Australian schedule, with the South Africa and Pakistan Test series separated by the three one-dayers against New Zealand.

But given Hobart is also a pink-ball game, it works perfectly for Handscomb.

"It's nice to score runs in your first game, but you can't judge me on just the one game," he said.

"I have to go out there and keep performing - hopefully I can, I think I can."

Handscomb says he isn't worried about the one-day series coming between the two Tests.

"I get a little break, I can come back, play for the Vics and chill out there," he said.

"It seems to be that way, it's a 12-month sport and you can travel the world playing it everywhere.

"So you need to be able to adapt pretty quickly and best players do that."

Handscomb admits he is still on cloud nine about his dream Test debut.

"It's still hard to fathom I have a baggy green and coming back, it's just nice to be around the Vic boys," he said.

"It was nice little script out there.

"I was hoping I didn't have to bat in that second innings or at least (fellow first-gamer) Matt Renshaw would hit the two runs that were needed and I could just sit on my bat.

"But it was nice to be out there with Matty as well in his first game - that was pretty cool."
