Man of the moment: Usman Khawaja. Finally Australia appear to have found a worthy long term No.3 replacement two years after Ricky Ponting's retirement. Khawaja's majestic 174 - his maiden Test ton - already has him in elite company. Only Don Bradman, Greg Chappell and Ponting have higher Test scores at No.3 in Brisbane.

Key moment: Mitchell Johnson claims Brendon McCullum for six. Sure, the Kiwis had already lost 2-3 before McCullum's arrival at the crease but the fiery Johnson's dismissal of New Zealand's inspirational captain reduced the visitors to their knees.

Stat of the day: 1993. The last time Australia's top four batsmen made more than 556 in an innings was in the Lord's Ashes Test 22 years ago when they amassed 591.

Summary: They were always behind the eight-ball after Khawaja picked up where David Warner (163) left off with the bat but at least New Zealand had hope at 1-102 in reply to Australia's whopping first innings. Then the Mitchells happened. Mitchell Johnson (2-52) and fellow left-arm quick Mitchell Starc (2-30) ensured the Kiwis lost 4-16. New Zealand will now pray Kane Williamson (55 not out) - and lots of rain - hangs around the Gabba this weekend.
