England humiliated by batting collapse against New Zealand

Eden Park has been the witness of a historic and humiliating collapse, with the England cricket side dismissed for a paltry 58 in the first Test against New Zealand.

Two months after their 4-0 defeat in the Ashes, England have succumbed to a display of swing bowling which saw wickets tumble on the opening morning of the series. Five batsmen, including captain Joe Root and returning star Ben Stokes, were dismissed for ducks in the innings. 

Black Caps opening bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee shared the spoils with six and four wickets respectively after captain Kane Williamson elected to bowl first in the Day-Night fixture. 

Left armer Boult bowled England captain Joe Root (0), all-rounder Ben Stokes (0) and Chris Woakes (5) and had Alastair Cook (5) and Dawid Malan (2) caught behind. He finished the innings off by dismissing James Anderson for 1.

His fellow new ball partner Tim Southee had opener Mark Stoneman caught behind by wicketkeeper BJ Watling (11), then took a return catch from Jonny Bairstow (0), bowled Moeen Ali (0) and had Stuart Broad caught brilliantly by Kane Williamson for a duck.

New Zealand captain Williamson had won the toss and had no hesitation in choosing to bowl first with the pink ball.

Ironic cheers rang out around the ground when England passed the record lowest score in Test history, 26 posted by New Zealand against the same opponent in 1955. 

Tailender Craig Overton was the lone highlight for England, who smashed 33 from 25 deliveries

The night before the match England Cricket tweeted to remember the time that Stuart Broad had dismissed New Zealand for under 100.
