Ferguson still hopes for Aussie recall

Dumped Test batsman Callum Ferguson is refusing to give up hope of an Australian recall, despite a clear show of frustration over his latest Sheffield Shield failure.

The South Australian was fined 10 per cent of his match fee for dissent after reacting angrily to his dismissal against Victoria in the Shield match which ended on Tuesday at the MCG.

After being trapped lbw by Victoria's Marcus Stoinis in the Redbacks' second innings for 24, the 32-year-old twice hit his bat onto his gloves, which he ripped off aggressively as he walked off.

It's been a difficult period for the middle-order batsman as he attempts to bounce back from his Test dumping.

Having failed in both innings of his debut in Australia's heavy 2nd Test loss to South Africa in Hobart, he has been unable to to make a big score in any of his four Shield innings since.

"It is disappointing when a lot of hard work over a long period of time gets you one crack and, to be honest, I didn't make enough runs down in Hobart to give them no option but to pick me," Ferguson told SEN radio on Thursday.

"In cricket, that's the way it goes. You ride the bumps.

"You certainly let it be inspiration for you to fight your tail off as hard as you can to get back in there.

"That's where my focus is now."

Ferguson was the victim of the national selectors' new focus on youth as they blooded batsmen Matt Renshaw, Nic Maddinson and Peter Handscomb for the third Test in Adelaide.

But he revealed selectors had not closed the door on his Test aspirations.

"It's pretty well down to weight of runs," Ferguson said.

"He (head selector Trevor Hohns) certainly said to me that the door wasn't shut and runs would carry weight going forward, even though I'd just been left out."
